UPS – More than just a resource

Industry, business, hospitality service, communication networks, all the sectors have one thing in common- the usage of power and electricity as one of the most important source for smooth functioning of the system. The systems like computers are loaded with protection software to protect internal damages. But often, the need for UPS battery may be neglected, and its use in growth and development may be unaddressed. Hence, several ways in which a UPS system may benefit are as follows:

Protection of the device: There are several circumstances where power outrages and surges occur. In these situations, there may be an internal jerk or shock caused to the device leading to permanent damage caused to them. Hence, installing a high operating temperature battery may aid in regular power supply even after power cuts and provide enough bandwidth to control the system and handle the work flow. The kicks and surges are controlled by the batteries. The load coverage required by the devices is calculated accurately using the Power Shield Calculator.

Backup for personal information: on sudden power cuts, the data or the current going work may disrupt leading to losses of data and other valuable information. Retrieval of this information may not be possible. The UPS keeps the power and functionality and aids in preventing permanent losses. The overall systems like those of banks and communication which depend on electrical supply may collapse on loss of data. Hence, an efficient system which is capable to bear the power load during cuts is essential.

Enhancing financial income: small duration power cuts stop several transactions, deals and other important work procedures which may divert the task and cause an overall loss to the company. Hence, to increase profits and keep the work flow in smooth flow, a UPS system catering all needs must be installed.

The above advantage can be enjoyed only when the system is taken care off. The system of low maintenance battery has become a common commodity in all spheres. To ensure its proper functioning, regular checkups and services are essential. Replacements of the damaged parts or the battery whenever required must be done. It is recommended that the batteries must be replaced in every 5 to 6 years.

Maintenance Tips of Deep Cycle Batteries

In contrast to the automotive type of batteries that most of us are used to, a deep cycle battery has some specific and unique maintenance requirements. Some of them, which must be followed religiously, are –

Charging

Even though these cyclic batteries come charged from the manufacturers itself and are ready-to-use, they must be fully charged by you before they are used. A charger must always be carried with them as they require multiple recharging at various stages unlike the single stage charging of automotive battery. To reach their maximum storage capacity, these batteries require numerous charge/discharge cycles. Till it is reached, they should never be completely depleted. The batteries are designed to be discharged and charged innumerable times during its service life. They must always be charged with a quality multiple stage charger and preferably with a built in "float mode" that can keep the batteries fully charged for longer periods when not in use. Thus, they also aid in increasing its service life.

Keep the battery clean

A main maintenance technique for these batteries which is often overlooked is cleaning the residues from its top surface. If not cleaned regularly, these residues get built up on the top and facilitate a ‘circuit’ between the positive and the negative terminals. This may trigger a discharge from the battery. Thus, the top and especially the positive and negative terminals must be properly cleaned with a wire brush. It’s a smart tip to coat the ports with a thin layer of grease. This blocks any oxidation process which may make your battery drop. They must be regularly inspected visually to ensure that they are not dropped or struck by anything. When placed in a boat, they must ideally be placed in a battery box which provides a security to the battery from dirt and even shock movement.

Equalizing

The batteries must be regularly ‘equalized’ by providing a low current charge for extended time even after the normal charging cycle has completed. This keeps the battery cells balanced and give out equal performance during use. This must be done at least once a week. The battery should also reach fully charged condition at least once every three weeks.
