Lead
batteries are still in use for Power Net applications because of the cost
factor. It is composed of a Sulphuric acid solution electrolyte, Lead-dioxide
cathode, and a sponge metallic Lead anode. It been more than 150 years that it
has introduced still improvements are being made to this battery. Though it is
experiencing stiff competition from newer cell chemistries, yet the lead acid
battery captures the lion's share in power battery market.
Discharge:
During
the discharge process, the positive plate (lead dioxide) and (negative plate) lead
respond with the sulfuric acid electrolyte to generate lead sulphate, energy,
and water.
Charge:
While
charging, the process is reversed completely. The lead sulphate and water are transformed
to lead, sulfuric acid and lead oxide by an external electrical charging
process electro-chemically.
Some
of the unique selling point of lead batteries that set them apart from their
counterparts are:
- Economical.
- Reliable. It is in use for the last 140 years of development.
- Robust and strong.
- Can adapt to overcharging.
- Low internal impedance.
- Can supply very high power currents.
- Unlimited battery shelf life if kept without electrolyte.
- Can be kept on trickle or float charge for long periods.
- Comes in wide range of capacities and sizes.
- Very much in demand all across the globe.
- One of the most recycled product.
Lead acid batteries can work even in a temperatures less than -45 °C.
Unlike all other batteries the discharge rate and effective capacity doesn’t
drop when the temperatures is low.
Usages:
There is a widespread usage of lead batteries worldwide in numerous Applications
like Submarines, High current drain applications, Automotive and traction
applications, Lighting, Grid scale energy storage, UPS battery, Emergency
power for electrical installations, Sealed battery types available for portable
equipment to name a few. These cells are one of the most affordable sources of
battery power available.
Varieties available for Lead Acid Batteries
Over the past few years battery manufacturers have introduced different
range of lead batteries like Antimony, Calcium, and Selenium to increase
various battery performance.
Thus, lead batteries are rated as the low maintenance battery because
they have unmatched advantage over the other types. However, storing your
battery in a cool place reduces the aging process, making it last longer. In
addition to that, the battery if partially put on charged during storage can have
extended life.
Manufacturers are continually working on improving the chemistry of these
batteries by introducing enhanced chemical combinations. Now, these batteries
have become even more efficient with the Lead Crystal battery technology. It is
a high operating temperature battery, which works seamlessly even in the places
that experience extreme temperatures.
